About This Course

Over four progressive weeks, young anglers will get to grips with the precision and versatility of pole fishing. This course offers a structured path from beginner to confident junior pole angler, with each session focusing on a key area: rig assembly, feeding techniques, elastic selection, and fish handling.

Guided by experienced coaches, juniors will explore various methods used by top match anglers—developing both the technical know-how and practical handling required to fish independently. Each lesson includes warm-up activities, practical instruction, and a short recap to reinforce what they’ve learned.

The course finishes with a fun practical fishing session and an informal assessment, where juniors apply everything they’ve practised. Successful participants will be awarded a certificate celebrating their progress and their new pole fishing skills.

Course Structure

Intro to Pole Fishing Techniques 120 mins

This session lays the groundwork by introducing juniors to the pole method. They'll explore how it differs from traditional float fishing and learn how to assemble poles, position rollers, and safely manage seat box setups. Coaches will also highlight key safety measures when handling poles and elastic.

Outcomes:

  • List three advantages and disadvantages of pole fishing
  • Identify and name key items of equipment
  • Demonstrate how to set up and unship pole sections safely

Extension task: Observe pole anglers online and look at how they manage their gear bankside.

Feeding Methods & Fish Management 120 mins

Juniors will experiment with various swim-feeding techniques and practice playing fish on a top kit with controlled pressure. They'll focus on fish care—landing, unhooking, and reducing handling time—with guidance from experienced coaches.

Outcomes:

  • Understand how different feeding methods influence fish behaviour
  • Safely guide fish using elastic
  • Demonstrate responsible unhooking on their lap

Extension task: Watch how competitive anglers feed consistently and respond to bites.

Understanding Rigs & Elastic 120 mins

Juniors dive into tackle tuning this week, focusing on matching rig types to fishing depth and behaviour. Coaches will explain how to pair elastic strength to species and conditions, and the importance of selecting hooks that suit both bait and target fish.

Outcomes:

  • Match elastic ratings to situations
  • Recognise rig types: margin, shallow, bottom, jigger
  • Identify correct hook for each bait type

Extension task: Research elastic colours and rig patterns used by match anglers.

Assessment & Practical Session 120 mins

This final week allows juniors to put all their knowledge into practice in a friendly match-style session. They’ll be guided through rig setup, swim prep, and fish handling while completing a short knowledge assessment.

Outcomes:

  • Fish confidently using full pole setup
  • Make informed decisions about tackle and feeding
  • Complete mini quiz and demonstrate practical skills

Achievement: All participants earn a Pole Fishing Certificate to mark their success!
