Grass Management

After implementing a 'no-mow' initiative during the summer of 2022 along the fishing lane that leads to the Walrow ponds, the results observed within just a few months were remarkable. By allowing nature to take its course without any intervention, we witnessed first hand the natural processes at work, guiding us in our understanding of environmental stewardship.

Tree Planting Initiative

We aim to focus on replacing trees which have been removed over the last few years due to otter fence and other projects on site. to establishing a natural corridor connecting the River Brue to the ponds. Trees play a crucial role in environmental protection.

Over their lifetimes, six native trees can absorb and sequester approximately one tonne of carbon dioxide. Additionally, tree planting helps prevent soil erosion, mitigates flooding effects, and filters air pollution. Trees provide shade, act as natural windbreaks, and enhance privacy. They also serve as an excellent means to attract wildlife to gardens, offering them habitats for breeding, shelter, and hibernation. Trees are a vital food source for various animals; their spring blossoms yield abundant nectar, while their autumn harvest of nuts provides sustenance for winter. We have planted native fruit trees along the lane from Walrow to the main gates, around the silvers lake This initiative would not only enhance the visual appeal for residents of Walrow Terrace, whose properties overlook the lane and the housing development, but it would also enrich the experience of those fishing in the ponds. Furthermore, these trees would produce blossoms for pollinators and fruit for birds and small mammals, fostering a sense of community pride. anglers would have the opportunity to harvest and enjoy the fruit as an added benefit.

A diverse mix of trees is ideal for supporting nature, as varying blooming periods will attract a wider range of insects and birds.

Recommended species include Crab Apple, Hazel, Cherry Plum, Field Maple, and Guelder Rose.

Tree and Hedge Pruning

Highbridge angling association refrain from hedge trimming during the primary breeding season for nesting birds, which typically spans from March to August each year. This timeframe may vary due to weather conditions, and some birds might nest outside of these months. Therefore, it is crucial to thoroughly inspect for active nests before proceeding with any cutting. Under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, it is illegal to intentionally take, damage, or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or under construction, as well as to intentionally kill, injure, or take chicks or adult birds, or to intentionally take or destroy any eggs.

Winter months are generally Highbridge angling association busy time for tree removal, pruning or trimming trees and Hedges is during the winter months, specifically from November to March, when most trees are dormant. This dormancy reduces their vulnerability to insect damage and disease. Ultimately, while a tree can be removed at any time, the rationale behind its removal will influence the timing of our work.
