The River Brue is a winding stretch of classic Somerset water, flowing through peaceful countryside and providing diverse fishing opportunities for anglers of all levels. Managed in part by Highbridge Angling Association, this river is renowned for its scenic charm and varied species, offering everything from silvers to predators.

With seasonal changes in flow and depth, anglers can enjoy ever-changing conditions, which keep fishing fresh and challenging. Roach, dace, perch, and skimmers are abundant throughout, while chub and pike add to the river’s dynamic mix.

The River Brue is a fantastic venue for those who enjoy a natural fishing experience, surrounded by reeds, willows, and abundant wildlife. Light float or stick-float tactics along with feeder fishing can all be highly effective depending on the time of year and water clarity.

  • Silverfish (Roach, Dace, Perch, Skimmers, Tench):
    • Rods: 12–13ft match or float rods
    • Reels: Lightweight fixed spool reels with 3–5lb line
    • Floats: Stick floats or wagglers depending on depth and flow
  • Chub, Wild Carp & Pike:
    • Rods: 10–11ft quiver or spinning rods
    • Reels: Medium reels with 4–6lb line for chub
    • Terminal Tackle: Wire traces and barbless trebles for pike

  • Silverfish:
    • Maggots, pinkies, bread punch, hemp
    • Groundbait with dark base for clear water conditions
  • Chub & Pike:
    • Chub: Cheese paste, lobworms, bread flake
    • Pike: Roach, smelt, mackerel (dead-baits); large lures or spinners
    • Perch: Chopped Worm & Caster or Drop shoting works well.

As with all river venues, always check water levels, observe the close season (March 15 to June 15), and respect wildlife habitats along the banks.
